I want to know what is the maximum number of CPU cores i. For example, as Microsoft Windows Server R2 Datacenter Edition supports a maximum of 64 physical sockets, would I be able to use cores 64 Processors x 12 cores each on a single server running Microsoft Windows Server R2 Datacenter Edition?

This is very old, but just to clear this up since the question was about cores and not sockets. The socket licensing limits per edition mentioned are correct, at 4,8, and 64 sockets for Datacenter edition. There is an architecture limitation in the implementation of processor groups and limit the number of logical processors cores :. Starting with Windows R2, processor groups were addeded to the architecture to allow more than 64 cores.

A maximum of 4 groups of 64 cores the limit we have seen is the logical core limit regardless of socket licensing limits. The distribution of logical cores into the processor groups is handled by Windows during boot, but can be overriden via the registry, although Windows will not allow a group to split a NUMA node half the logical processors from a node in group 0 and the other half in node 1 for example is a NO. If you disable NUMA you could manually setup something uneven like 64 cores in group 0 and 16 in group 1, but ideally you want a balanced distribution of logical processors across groups.
